Discussion | Israel on Our Minds with Ambassador Ido Aharoni (in-person and online)

Even those of us who follow the news from Israeli regularly are left with more questions than insight: How should we think about Israel security in the face of a rapidly changing Middle East? What is the government doing in response to the worldwide condemnation of the Jewish State . . . and what could it do? Has the Start-Up Nation sputtered out? Can the breach between the religious and the secular populations be healed — and how? Does the Israeli government take the concerns and opinions of the Jewish diaspora seriously enough? Should it? With so many questions — and so much confusion — they have recruited the ideal person to pull back the curtain on the complicated situation: an Israel diplomat, university professor, writer and investor, Ido Aharoni.

Book Discussion | Reds in Blue: UNESCO, World Governance, and the Soviet Internationalist Imagination

Louis Porter's book investigates Soviet relations with UNESCO to present a novel way of thinking about the role of the United Nations in the Soviet experience of the Cold War. Drawing on unused archival material, the book examines the forgotten stories of Soviet citizens who contributed to the nuts-and-bolts operations of world governance. These unexamined dimensions of everyday participation in the UN’s bureaucracy, conferences, publications, and technical assistance show the body’s importance for a group of Soviet “one-worlders,” who used the UN to imagine and work for a better world amidst the realities of the Cold War.

Lecture | Harvard-Trained Economist Discusses His Acclaimed Book on Economics and History (Online!)

Join us for a virtual event with Harvard-trained economist, prolific author, and member of the Australian House of Representatives Andrew Leigh, as he discusses his latest book. In How Economics Explains the World, Leigh presents a new way to understand the human story. From the dawn of agriculture to AI, this is the story of how ingenuity, greed and desire for betterment have—to an astonishing degree—determined our past, present and future. Named one of The Economist's Best Books of the Year, this small book tells a big story. It is the story of capitalism—of how our market system developed. It is the story of the discipline of economics and some of the key figures who formed it. And it is the story of how economic forces have shaped world history. Why didn’t Africa colonize Europe instead of the other way around? What happened when countries erected trade and immigration barriers in the 1930s? Why did the Allies win World War II? Why did inequality in many advanced countries fall during the 1950s and 1960s? How did property rights drive China’s growth surge in the 1980s? How does climate change threaten our future prosperity? The answers to these questions and more are found in How Economics Explains the World.

Lecture | Photographer Jill Freedman's Work in Poland, Discussed by Family Member & Expert

When the documentary and street photographer Jill Freedman went to Poland in April 1993, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising, she wrote that she made the journey as a pilgrim “to mourn the dead, to honor them,” along with the “survivors, their children, old soldiers and witnesses.” She returned to the sites of destruction again the next year. Susan Chevlowe, PhD, will discuss the series of photographs that resulted from these two trips, including to additional sites in Hungary and the Czechia, and the book that Freedman had planned but that was left unrealized at the time of her death. Her presentation will be followed by a conversation with family member Wendy Wernick.

Opening Reception | Solo Exhibition on the Emptiness of Nostalgia: The Moon Is Still Free

Artist Dana Powell’s intimate paintings are curiously uninhabited, and yet they are littered with the traces of human life. As she maps this geography of displacement, her eye finds wonder and respite in the natural world, capturing the tiny miracles of a sunset or the moon in a blue sky. Powell’s compositions resist straightforward perspectives, the horizon line slightly tilted or viewed from above or below. Like an iPhone snapshot capturing a moment, they feel immediate and personal. Tightly rendered in oil on linen, Powell’s paintings are a paradox of nostalgia and apprehension, a moment caught in a tug of war between past and future. Each brushstroke is a quiet testament to the unsettling fragmentation of contemporary experience—and a whispered thank you to the sky and stars. Exhibition on view from April 24th through May 30th.

Opening Reception | A Dialogue Between Ernest Briggs and Peter Bonner in Historic Brownstone

This exhibition brings together two generations of abstraction, juxtaposing the bold, gestural work of Ernest Briggs with the introspective, process-driven paintings of Peter Bonner. A key figure in the second generation of Abstract Expressionism, Briggs embodied the movement’s raw energy and spontaneity, using vigorous brushwork to express emotion and the rugged intensity of human nature. In contrast, Bonner explores perception, identity, and memory through layered compositions that invite contemplation beyond the surface. By placing these two artists in conversation, A Dialogue Between Ernest Briggs and Peter Bonner offers a fresh perspective on abstraction’s evolution, celebrating both its historical foundations and contemporary innovations. Inluding a sculpture by Jack Cesareo.

Opening Reception | Exhibition Questioning the Structures of Hierarchy in Art: Resilience of Scale

For Resilience of Scale, British artist Thomas J. Price will present five towering bronze figures and a large-scale photographic work. Together, the works amplify traditionally marginalized bodies and redress structures of hierarchy, inviting questions about who we chose to celebrate in art. Resilience of Scale presents an environment where mobility is truly felt: viewers will be able to move through the space to engage with the works directly and from all vantage points, positioning themselves within the artist’s narrative rather observing from a detached distance. Soaring to heights as great as 12 feet and installed directly on the floor, Price’s bronzes honor everyday people by granting them the grand scale and material finish long central to Western traditions of monument making, a genre and medium historically reserved for members of the social, economic and cultural elite. Each of the works’ fictional identities are composites derived from images and people observed on the street, in magazines and at open call castings. Constructed using digital sculpting and lost-wax casting techniques, these figures often don casual clothing and stand in deliberately casual poses, seemingly lost in their own thoughts, unbothered by the viewers over whom they soar. Through this combination of operatic scale, laudatory medium and quotidian subject, Price challenges the longstanding aesthetic conventions that underpin representations of power. And, the artist’s photographs likewise draw attention to the ways in which historical institutions—typically regarded as arbiters of truth—have limited society’s understanding of and openness to socioeconomic mobility for all. Through this conceptual intervention, Price invites viewers to engage with a narrative that is both personal and critical of the conventions that have historically shaped art and culture. This exhibition is on view from April 24th through June 14th. Concurrent with the exhibition, Times Square Arts will exhibit Price’s massive bronze figure, ‘Grounded in the Stars’ (2023) in Times Square, at Broadway and 46th Street, from 29 April to 17 June 2025. Price’s stop-motion animations from his ‘Man Series,’ will also be presented on over 90 of the Times Square district’s billboards nightly from 11:57pm to 12am, from 1 – 31 May 2025 as a part of the Midnight Moment program.

Opening Reception | Laura Lima's "Exhibition in Motion" that "Functions as a Living Organism": Bale Literal

Bale Literal (Literal Ballet) from artist Laura Lima is an exhibition in motion-objects and artworks dance through the space in a choreographed movement of the absurd. Hanging from a pulley system, the objects (or ballerinas) glide and bounce across the gallery, powered by the energy of a cyclist on a modified bike apparatus. The objects, lighting, musical score, support team, and pulley system function like a living organism: evolving, adapting, and moving in perfect synchrony. The sound and lighting theatrics, controlled simultaneously by the cyclist, create particular moods and atmospheres which transform the objects into living beings. The Bale Literal allows the viewer to construct their own narratives from its riotous cadences, inviting interpretation and improvisation in a carnivalesque call-and-response. Laura Lima is a Brazilian artist whose work is "not installation, not performance, not cinema." Lima's work, which she sometimes calls 'images' are attempts to visually articulate the philosophical concerns that preoccupy her and destabilize the structures we take for granted. Her work often creates ambiguous and performative situations, in which human relationships are examined, and social expectations are overturned. Her solo exhibitions have popped up in institutions around the world such as MACBA Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art, Fondazione Prada, National Gallery of Denmark, Museum of Modern Art of Buenos Aires, Bonniers Konsthall (Stockholm), Migros Museum fur Gegenwartskunst (Zurich), and many others. Moreover, Lima's works are held in numerous important collections, including the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles;Modern Art Museum of Sao Paulo; Bonniers Konsthall, Sweden; Migros Museum fur Gegenwartskunst, Switzerland; Zabludowicz Collection; and the Bonnefantenmuseum, The Netherlands, among others. The music for this iteration of the Bale Literal was specially created by Arto Lindsay, Thiago Nassif, and Rodrigo Coelho. Exhibition on display from April 24th to May 30th.

Lecture | Say It with Flowers – Oriental Style: Semiotics, Botany and Affection in 19th Century Germany

No Valentine’s Day goes by without countless billboards and online ads from floral companies urging us – and with the same success every year – to ‘say it with flowers’. Apparently, we still attribute to flowers a latent ability to ‘say’ things felt to defy verbal articulation on account of their coming ‘straight from the heart’. The lecture traces our persistent trust in flowers as a medium for expressing the ineffable back to what was known in the 19 th century as the “Oriental Language of Flowers”, a then ubiquitous practice of communicating through ‘talking’ bouquets. Analysis shows that the principles underlying this practice (and the wealth of popular writings on the subject) were largely the result of the workings of a contemporary dispositif that combined botany, semiotics and hermeneutics with concepts of eroticism and affect poetics in an attempt to overcome a veritable language crisis. The Language of Flowers not only played an important part in the shaping of the still prevalent idea that the ‘flowery language’ of lyrical poetry was the natural vehicle of implied, hidden meanings, and the genre itself practically tantamount to oblique speech, but also inspired the notion that “symbols” could act as somehow universal signs. The lecture aims to explore the interconnections between these phenomena and to shed light on the vital role played by oriental topoi, scenarios, and export products in this particular context. Light reception to follow

Opening Reception | Solo Show of Dark Visions, Dystopian Futures, and Urgent Warnings: Transylvania on Hudson

Prepare to enter a world of dark visions, dystopian futures, and urgent warnings, as acclaimed artist Mari Biro presents Transylvania on Hudson. Through painting, sculpture, photomontage, installation, and live performance, Biro masterfully blends ancient legend with modern technological anxieties. The exhibition explores three critical themes: The Alienation of Cellphone Addiction: A chilling reflection on our obsession with screens leading to a loss of human connection and sensory awareness--most evident deep within the New York subway tunnels. Human Collectibles: A prophetic vision of a dystopian future where art and humanity are extinct replaced by a cold mechanized society. The Tyranny of Curators: A powerful critique of the art world's bureaucratic elite urging audiences to reclaim the right to judge art for themselves. "Technology was meant to connect us but instead it has turned us into isolated figures--half-human half-machine" says Mari Biro. "This exhibition is a wake-up call. It asks: What happens when we let screens replace our senses and corporations dictate creativity?"

Lecture | Historian and Author Shares Storied Past of the Compass while Showcasing Museum Artifacts

This event is a captivating evening with historian Jerry Brotton, author of Four Points of the Compass: The Unexpected History of Direction. In the first-floor gallery of the museum’s new exhibition, Brotton will chart a course to share the fascinating story of the compass and the very concept of direction itself. Together, attendees will explore how societies across time and place have used the four cardinal directions—North, South, East, and West—not just to navigate, but to understand who they are by projecting where they are. Throughout his presentation, Brotton will share how, for millennia, these four directions have been foundational to our travel, navigation, and exploration, and are central to the imaginative, moral, and political geography of virtually every culture in the world. But, they are far more subjective—and sometimes contradictory—than we might realize. In addition to sharing intriguing insights from his book, Brotton will showcase artifacts from the Museum’s collection and archives, including some of the objects on display in the exhibition. D
