Symposium | The Art of Blackness: Blackness in Visual and Expressive Culture

What does blackness mean in the context of art criticism? Formal element? Lived experience? Race? How might blackness be conceived in terms not exclusively bound to the sociological and questions of positive/negative, authenticity, truth, or essence? Centering the work of scholars devoted to black visual and expressive culture, this concentration of black study considers the multivalence and critical consequence of blackness as an aesthetic and cultural idea enacted through and across the arts (e.g., literature, film, performance, contemporary art, and music).

Opening Reception | Solo Show of Dark Visions, Dystopian Futures, and Urgent Warnings: Transylvania on Hudson.

Prepare to enter a world of dark visions, dystopian futures, and urgent warnings, as acclaimed artist Mari Biro presents Transylvania on Hudson. Through painting, sculpture, photomontage, installation, and live performance, Biro masterfully blends ancient legend with modern technological anxieties. The exhibition explores three critical themes: The Alienation of Cellphone Addiction: A chilling reflection on our obsession with screens leading to a loss of human connection and sensory awareness--most evident deep within the New York subway tunnels. Human Collectibles: A prophetic vision of a dystopian future where art and humanity are extinct replaced by a cold mechanized society. The Tyranny of Curators: A powerful critique of the art world's bureaucratic elite urging audiences to reclaim the right to judge art for themselves. "Technology was meant to connect us but instead it has turned us into isolated figures--half-human half-machine" says Mari Biro. "This exhibition is a wake-up call. It asks: What happens when we let screens replace our senses and corporations dictate creativity?"

Talk | Artist Gallery Talk with Influential Filmmaker and Video Artist Charles Atlas

This event celebrates Charles Atlas, an exceptional figure whose innovations with video as an artistic medium span five decades of technological evolution and collaboration. Atlas will appear in-person for the event, in conversation with gallery directors Rebecca Cleman and Karl McCool. Atlas will guide the audience through excerpts of his blue and green screen works, which showcase Atlas's rich array of collaborators--including the band Sonic Youth--and his early experiments in video production techniques. As filmmaker-in-residence for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Atlas developed the "videodance" genre, in which the camera, moving dynamically with the dancers, becomes an integral part of a dance rather than an objective, fixed-perspective recorder. Atlas draws from his distinctive sensibility as a cineaste to amplify his subject's movements with inventive video effects, including doubling, image overlay, and striking compositions within the frame. Preceding the conversation, the gallery will screen an episode from The Martha Tapes (1996-2000), Atlas's series featuring found footage of dance performance, interrupted by irreverent callouts to famous "Marthas" in Hollywood cinema. Seating is first come, first serve. RSVP does not guarantee entry, but will help track interest and send event updates and reminders.
