Six celebrated playwrights take us back to America's beginnings in this original play written for and about New York's historic Federal Hall The Democracy Project is a journey through the first of the 527 momentous days when New York City was the first capital of the revolutionary United States government. The presidency was new, the slave trade was in debate, and the Constitution -- and the rights of all this land's inhabitants -- hung in the balance. George Washington struggles to define his presidency; James Madison presents the Bill of Rights; Muscogee (Creek) Chief Alexander McGillivray maneuvers to preserve his nation's land by signing the first international treaty with the United States; and Ona Judge, a woman enslaved by Martha Washington, sees through the Quaker petitions to end the slave trade.

Gallery Talk | Living Room, San Francisco, 1986: 3D Curatorial Tour (online)
Curator Matthew Terrell gives a 3D tour and discussion of the exhibition. The AIDS Memorial Quilt began in San Francisco in 1986 as a way to remember those who died from a mysterious and frightening new disease. A group of friends, including prominent AIDS activist Cleve Jones, gathered in Nancy Pelosi?s living room and began to stitch the beginnings of the AIDS Memorial Quilt. Soon people from around the country sent Jones their own panels, and the project grew to become the largest community-based art project in the world. The quilt currently consists of more than 48,000 individual memorial panels and weighs an estimated 54 tons. In 2020, Pelosi announced that the quilt would soon be permanently housed at the AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park. Public display of the AIDS Memorial Quilt is part of the National AIDS Memorial?s efforts to bring the Quilt to communities across the United States to raise greater awareness and education about HIV/AIDS and to remember those lost to the pandemic. Living Room, San Francisco, 1986 will recreate the early days of the quilt, while also bringing in work from contemporary artists (Dr. Cynthia Davis, Aubrey Longley-Cook, Robert Sherer, Joey Terrill) who address issues of HIV/AIDS and its legacy. This exhibit will be an immersive celebration of art as community activism. What viewers will leave with is an understanding of how grassroots projects, like the AIDS Memorial Quilt, can have a long-lasting impact. Viewers will get to step inside a gallery turned living room, and through strategically placed archival material and reproductions, feel like they are witness to history. The mix of artists affected by HIV/AIDS will trace a long legacy of HIV activism as art. As the AIDS Memorial Quilt moves to San Francisco permanently, this exhibition will give viewers a better understanding of this incredible piece of community art.

Drop in for drinks, mingling, and crafts, as well as a short selection of curated readings by Deb Edel, Olivia Newsome, Fabliha Anbar, and Amy Beth. Join at any point between 5:30-7:30 PM. Readings will begin at about 6:15 PM. About the Readers Deb Edel is one of the founders of the Lesbian Herstory Archives. She has been working with the Archives steadily since its inception in 1974. Trained as a social worker and psychologist, Deborah spent her working life focused on the intersectionality of education and mental health as an educational therapist, a counselor, and a school administrator. Olivia Newsome (she/her) is an archivist, lesbrarian, and volunteer at the Lesbian Herstory Archives. She focuses on how to apply Disability Justice and other critical frameworks to her efforts as an information professional. You can check out one of Olivia's archival projects titled On Selfhood: Young Lesbians Within the Margins. Fabliha Anbar is a multi-disciplinary artist, writer, and community organizer based in New York City. She is the cultural organizer for Arts & Democracy where her main focus is cultivating a safe environment for immigrant youth to creatively express themselves through art and culture. Fabliha is also the founder of the Marigold Seeds Collective, a grassroots organization for LGBTQ+ South Asians and Indo-Caribbeans. She has been featured in multiple publications such as Teen Vogue, NBC News, and more. Fabliha utilizes the many facets of her identity in her writing and believes storytelling is a powerful tool to heal souls. Registration required.

Jazz | Louis Cato, Bandleader on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert -- Outdoors
Louis Cato is a Grammy-nominated and internationally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter. He has worked with an array of artists including Bobby McFerrin, Snarky Puppy, Jon Batiste, Q-Tip, and A Tribe Called Quest. His love of music started at age 2 when the purchase of his first drum set evolved into an appreciation of the southern gospel from his native North Carolina and continued into his education at the Berklee College of Music. Cato has an undeniable ability to craft sonic landscapes into timeless masterpieces. After two decades of lending his talents to other projects, Cato released his first solo record Starting Now (2017), which he also mixed and produced entirely by himself. He is currently finishing his newest album which is due out later this year.

Concert | Folk Music Festival
A three-part folk festival with Terrell King’s lap steel guitar, Yacouba Sissoko’s masterful kora, and a Michael Daves-led bluegrass supergroup. Terrell King, a Brooklyn native, is an awe-inspiring, young, multi-talented musician and 3rd generation lap steel guitarist. King has appeared on many stages and played many services; he was the pedal steel guitarist in Always Patsy Cline in Weston, Vermont, and plays every Sunday at The House of God Church (Keith Dominion). King has played with musicians such as The Campbell Brothers, Lonnie “Big Ben” Bennett, Miller and the Other Sinners, and recorded an EP with Sacred Steel Records. For this performance in Bryant Park, King will play alongside his family band, which includes cousins Teione Noble (rhythm guitar), Tim Williams (bass), and Tim Allen, Jr. (drums). Master kora player Yacouba Sissoko devotes his musical gift to expand the awareness of West African history and culture, spread the word of peace, and empower his listeners to take charge and realize their imagined futures. His performances have a magical effect on audiences as he skillfully transforms traditional songs and stories that he learned from his forefathers into modern day messages of peace, love, and harmony. His flexible virtuosity, which enables him to move seamlessly from one musical genre to another, has attracted the attention of an array of musicians who have sought him out as a collaborator – Sissoko has recorded with a variety of artists including Paul Simon, Baaba Maal, Ami Koita, Regina Carter, Leni Stern, and Abdoulaye Diabate. Heralded as “a leading light of the New York bluegrass scene” by The New York Times, Georgia-born guitarist/singer Michael Daves has garnered attention for his work with Tony Trischka, Steve Martin, and Chris Thile, with whom he shares a Grammy nomination for their 2011 album Sleep With One Eye Open. Play | Euripides's The Bacchae: Going Mad in Thebes
Consider to be Euripides' magnum opus, The Bacchae is play about wisdom. Euripides uses Dionysus, not only the god of wine and revelry or the god in whose honor the dramatic festivals are held annually but, by extension, the god of the human subconscious, transporting us to where Dionysus was born, in Thebes, where the action of the play is set. Thebes is now ruled by his cousin, Pentheus, who opposes Dionysus' cult. There, he sees the sacred tomb of his mother, Semele, daughter of Cadmus, the founder of Thebes. Despite his success in the East where his cult has been accepted, the Greeks, who are nonbelievers, are taught a lesson, as Dionysus has cast his spirit upon the Thebans, represented by the Chorus, driving them mad, having them run out of their homes in ecstatic frenzy and calling to others to join them.
