Symposium | The Art of Blackness: Blackness in Visual and Expressive Culture

What does blackness mean in the context of art criticism? Formal element? Lived experience? Race? How might blackness be conceived in terms not exclusively bound to the sociological and questions of positive/negative, authenticity, truth, or essence? Centering the work of scholars devoted to black visual and expressive culture, this concentration of black study considers the multivalence and critical consequence of blackness as an aesthetic and cultural idea enacted through and across the arts (e.g., literature, film, performance, contemporary art, and music).

Play | New Original Play: A Meditation on Hope

On the day of the 2024 solar eclipse, as Arizona reinstates the long-dormant 1864 abortion ban, Bette Singer—a fiercely dedicated head of a fetal medicine unit—finds her world upended. Caught between her patients, the law, and her family, she is forced to confront the limits of faith, duty, and the American Dream. As she struggles to hold onto hope and autonomy, Bette conjures a surreal quilting circle that collides with the sterile walls of the hospital and seeks reconciliation with her family. With wit and poignancy, A Meditation on Hope exposes how systems of power continue to find new ways to control women’s bodies and beliefs across centuries, begging the question: will hope be enough to sustain those left fighting for the future? Opening Reception | Solo Show Investigating Gender & the Power of Flamboyance: Stardust

Stardust is an exhibition of historic work by Manuel Pardo (1952-2012). Bringing together works that span the artist's career--from his early portraits investigating gender expression and sense of self, to his later works, the drawings and paintings on view evince a singular style that refigures glamor, gaudiness, and femininity as markers of strength, resilience, and agency. Anchoring the exhibition is a selection of Pardo's astonishingly intricate drawings from his Stardust series, 2003-2012. For this series, Pardo shifted his practice away from painting to focus on highly layered, glittering drawings of stylized female figures. These compositions--comprised exclusively of Gelly Roll Stardust pen ink on handmade paper -- may appear simple in the exaggerated-quality of the subjects and the serial nature of the visual motifs, yet their ease belies the technical acumen required for their creation. This appreciation for ornament and decoration carries over to Pardo's Designer Urns,. In response to the loss of so many loved ones due to AIDS in the late-80s and early-90s, Pardo created two-dimensional vessels embellished with flowers, polka-dots, ogees, and arabesque lines: one urn for each of his friends who died from the illness. Beautiful in their form, these works moreover function as defiant testaments to the larger-than-life personalities of the individuals they honor. Shown alongside Pardo's painted portraits from the mid-80s, these works demonstrate a lifelong investigation into the totemic power of flamboyance, where an arched brow and painted lid are heralded as forms of power and protection. This exhibition is on view from April 25th though May 31st.

Opening Reception | Solo Show of Dark Visions, Dystopian Futures, and Urgent Warnings: Transylvania on Hudson.

Prepare to enter a world of dark visions, dystopian futures, and urgent warnings, as acclaimed artist Mari Biro presents Transylvania on Hudson. Through painting, sculpture, photomontage, installation, and live performance, Biro masterfully blends ancient legend with modern technological anxieties. The exhibition explores three critical themes: The Alienation of Cellphone Addiction: A chilling reflection on our obsession with screens leading to a loss of human connection and sensory awareness--most evident deep within the New York subway tunnels. Human Collectibles: A prophetic vision of a dystopian future where art and humanity are extinct replaced by a cold mechanized society. The Tyranny of Curators: A powerful critique of the art world's bureaucratic elite urging audiences to reclaim the right to judge art for themselves. "Technology was meant to connect us but instead it has turned us into isolated figures--half-human half-machine" says Mari Biro. "This exhibition is a wake-up call. It asks: What happens when we let screens replace our senses and corporations dictate creativity?"

Talk | Artist Gallery Talk with Influential Filmmaker and Video Artist Charles Atlas

This event celebrates Charles Atlas, an exceptional figure whose innovations with video as an artistic medium span five decades of technological evolution and collaboration. Atlas will appear in-person for the event, in conversation with gallery directors Rebecca Cleman and Karl McCool. Atlas will guide the audience through excerpts of his blue and green screen works, which showcase Atlas's rich array of collaborators--including the band Sonic Youth--and his early experiments in video production techniques. As filmmaker-in-residence for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Atlas developed the "videodance" genre, in which the camera, moving dynamically with the dancers, becomes an integral part of a dance rather than an objective, fixed-perspective recorder. Atlas draws from his distinctive sensibility as a cineaste to amplify his subject's movements with inventive video effects, including doubling, image overlay, and striking compositions within the frame. Preceding the conversation, the gallery will screen an episode from The Martha Tapes (1996-2000), Atlas's series featuring found footage of dance performance, interrupted by irreverent callouts to famous "Marthas" in Hollywood cinema. Seating is first come, first serve. RSVP does not guarantee entry, but will help track interest and send event updates and reminders.

Workshop | One-Day Choir Class with Gaia Music Collective

Gaia Music Collective will help participants raise their voices to sing “Something’s Got a Hold On Me” by the one and only Etta James. Written by Etta James herself, Pearl Woods, and Leroy Kirkland, this song took the country by storm in 1962 as it climbed the billboard hot 100 and reached #4 on the billboard R&B chart. Infused with jazz, gospel, soul and R&B flavors, this feel-good song explores the experience of being swept away in the flurry of a new love. Led and arranged by Gaia Music Collective’s facilitating artist, Kenter Davies, the group will explore a reimagined choral arrangement that will bring this iconic tune to new heights. Gaia Music Collective events are participatory, but low-pressure. everyone is invited to sing along and make music, but each participant is encouragred to draw their own boundaries and engage at their own pace. This is a judgment-free community where you can express yourself however feels right!

Screening | Film Screening with Live Orchestra

This event is a live-to-picture performance of Jose Maria Velasco Maidana's 1930 silent film masterpiece, Wara Wara, the only surviving work from Bolivia's silent film era. This captivating "superproduction" tells the tale of a forbidden romance between an Inca princess and a Spanish conquistador, and is accompanied here by the world premiere of an original orchestral score, co-composed by NYU's Screen Scoring Program. Jazz | 'Rising Star Vibraphonist' Joins Ensemble for Sunday Afternoon Jazz

"The jazz world can get stuck in a battle between the head and the heart, but rarely do you find an improviser like Patricia Brennan [whose] music seems to exist in a realm outside the body, but stays loaded with feeling." - Giovanni Russonello, The New York Times This jazz concert features Patricia Brennan, alongside Columbia University Jazz Ensembles. Mexican born vibraphonist, marimbist, improviser and composer Patricia Brennan "has been widely feted as one of the instrument's newer leaders," observed The New York City Jazz Record.
