Artist Matthew Monahan presents a new group of wall-based sculptural reliefs and large-scale works on paper. Known for his exploration between sculpture and painting, Monahan focuses on the problem of modeled relief in these new works. Through gouging, pinching, and subtle material shifts, he creates forms that exist between the seen and unseen, leaving a record of both the incidental and the intentional.
Monahan’s sculptures are freed from physical enclosures, allowing light and shadow to express the volume of his forms. These new works continue his exploration of human struggle, both mental and physical, as well as the history of figuration. The figures in his reliefs seem restrained by and bursting from the flat ground around them, embodying a tension between abstraction and empathy.
