Free Events, Free Things to Do in New York City!  Read More

Buying a ticket to a Broadway show is not the only way to be able to enjoy that increadibly rich theater scene of New York City.

It's a known fact that NYC theater tickets are rather expensive, but a significantly less know fact is that you can attend a NYC theater show that is totally free and open for general public. Or you can ontain coplimentary tickets for an off Brodway, off off Broadway and sometimes Broadway show (a play or a musical) free of charge or at a significant discount. But you do need to know how to go about it!

While many other sites give information about discount theater tickets in NYC, Club Free Time gives you all the info about those NYC theater performances that are totally free and open for general public. In addition, as a CFT member you have a chance to attend not-at-all-free off Broadway, off off Broadway and sometimes Broadway theater performances at no cost. if you are looking for cheap theater tickets in NYC - you should look no further: we are able to obtain free tickets for our members when a show has some unsold seats and producers would like to create that magical 'full house' feel. As an article in The New York Times said: New York is abuzz with so much culture that they're giving it away.

Our members attend off-Broadway, off-off-Broadway and sometimes Broadway shows, opera, classical music and jazz concerts, dance performances, children shows, comedy clubs, cabaret, etc. using complimentary tickets which they can reserve once they login to www.clubfreetime.com.

There are 41 Broadway theatres, approximately 85 Off-Broadway theatres, and about 120 off off Broadway theaters in NYC. These categories are not about the quality of productions or the talent involved, it's all about the number of seats in the venue: Broadway theaters have over 500 seats, off-Broadway theaters have  between 100 and 499 and the bvenues with fewer than 100 seats are referred to as Off Off Broadway.

At the beginning of the 20th century many theatres were located on Broadway and that's when the 'Broadway theater' term came to life. Only three 'Broadway' theatres are located on Broadway nowadays: the Winter Garden, the Marquis, and the Broadway Theatre. All other Broadway theaters are located in the theater district in the blocks east and west of Broadway around Times Square. The Theater District lies between 42nd and 53rd streets.

In the 1890s this section of Broadway was one of the first part of town to be lit with electric lights, which led to the New York Telegram headline 'Found on the Great White Way' and that's how the nickname 'the Great White Way' came to life. Most visitors never venture off the Great White Way. Approximately 14 million people a year attending Broadway shows.

Meanwhile, although Eugene O'Neill famously said in 1931: ''One of the things I regret, is the passing of the experimental group theater,'' off Broadway and off off Broadway theaters, being significantly less commercial then Broadway, or, in many cases, not commercial at all, offer a great variety of extremelly interesting and exciting experimental and not-so-experimental works. If you want to see real quality theater - give off Broadway and off off Broadway theater a try.

Off Broadway theaters have nurtured Pulitzer Prize-winning plays and playwrights and attracted prominent actors and actresses. Musicals such as ''A Chorus Line'' and ''Ain't Misbehavin' '' moved to Broadway from off Broadway. You may as well see a Broadway show at an Off Broadway theater as producers can continue running their shows with considerably reduced weekly costs by going from Broadway to Off-Broadway, as actor salaries and advertising costs are much less for off Broadway theaters. (We put lots of efforts in obtaining complimentary tickets for off Broadway shows for our members). One of the most famous off Broadway theaters is the Public Theater

The world of Off Off Broadway theaters is one of most interesting and unknown parts of New York City's theatrical life. It gives you the real sence of belonging as being so close to the stage allows you to see every nuance of what's happening there. That's where young, exciting playwrights are discovered. That's where you can see talented, unknown actors who may become the big stars of tomorrow at the tiny fraction of a Broadway ticket price.

Join Club Free Time and enjoy free theater performances or get free tickets to the shows (off Broadway, off off Broadway and sometimes even Broadway) which are not free for general public, but are free for Club Free Time members! Club Free Time is a NYC staple for finding amazing things to do for free. Some amazing deals are available in advance, but in some cases you will be able to get those last minute theater tickets. NYC gives you many options.

Play | New Original Play: A Meditation on Hope

On the day of the 2024 solar eclipse, as Arizona reinstates the long-dormant 1864 abortion ban, Bette Singer—a fiercely dedicated head of a fetal medicine unit—finds her world upended. Caught between her patients, the law, and her family, she is forced to confront the limits of faith, duty, and the American Dream. As she struggles to hold onto hope and autonomy, Bette conjures a surreal quilting circle that collides with the sterile walls of the hospital and seeks reconciliation with her family. With wit and poignancy, A Meditation on Hope exposes how systems of power continue to find new ways to control women’s bodies and beliefs across centuries, begging the question: will hope be enough to sustain those left fighting for the future? Play | Award-Winning Italian Play about Dangerous Migration by Sea: Lampedusa Beach

Nadia Kibout is Shauba, an African migrant who drowns near the shores of the island of Lampedusa. In that inexorable time Shauba recounts minute by minute the chronicle of her end. The actress thus brings to life the "Theatre of the Shipwreck." She fulfills her mythical function of giving body to those who are not there and name to those who do not have it. Before her is the audience, facing its responsibilities. The narrative represents the very current issue of migrants. Having set out for Europe, driven by the dream of her beloved Aunt Mahama who wants Africa's children free from the blackmail of capitalism, Shauba faces her journey on a sea cart crammed with migrants, capsizing after a fight between boatmen intent on vying for the young woman's body. The sea is innocent, the narrative suggests; the man, on the other hand, is at fault. The performance is accompanied by the soundscapes of Maestro Daniele Onorati and his oodoo, very special ceramic musical instruments. Play | One-Man Show Exploring Sensationalist Media Story in 1981 Italy: Alfredino, Italy in a Deep Well

On the evening of June 10, 1981. six year old Alfredo (Alfredino) Rampi fell 36 meters deep into a well in Vermicino, a village near Rome. In the next 35 hours, Italy was glued to the TV watching the first non-stop live broadcast to cover the attempt to save him. It was a turning point in the history of Italian TV, which is still studied in journalism schools, and where the modern sensationalist news coverage was (essentially) born. In this solo performance, the story is brought back to life, introducing the many characters of that night: the first journalist who rushed to the scene, the sandwich seller who profited from the attending crowd, President Pertini, the robots Mazinga and Grendizer, and more. At the core of the narration there is Alfredino, stuck in that deep well with his entire country. Written & Performed by Fabio Banfo In Italian with English subtitles.

Performance | Playing with Social Codes through Performance Art: The Pin

Artist Pilvi Takala presents The Pin, a new performance that continues her work playing with social codes. Takala's work is set in motion by actors--identifiable only by a pin fastened to their shirts--who canvass the park, blending in with the public until they spontaneously approach unsuspecting passersby. Each performer is trained to improvise based on a script written by the artist, following the responses of the participating public. The seemingly happenstance interactions expose our preconceived expectations of how we engage with others in public spaces, and what might bring strangers to either connect or disengage. In setting up these exchanges, Takala makes visible how we grapple with polite contact, inclusion, and exclusion, while blurring the line between reality and fiction. Pilvi Takala's practice is centered on poking, prodding, and questioning conventions and codes in an effort to lay bare the social frameworks of our offices, parks, shopping malls, and other public spaces. The artist disrupts the experience of daily routines, using performative interventions as a means to push the audience to confront its own assumptions and behaviors. Often humorous--and almost always perplexing--her actions and interactions reveal our inherent discomfort with discomfort.

Performance | New Humorous Performance Piece by 'Major Vocal Talent' Joseph Keckler

"Phenomenal. Major vocal talent ... with a range that shatters boundaries ... and a trickster's dark humor." --The New York Times Part site-specific concert, part impressionistic essay, A Good Night in the Trauma Garden positions the court as a space of blended times and mythologies, populated by gods and monsters; heroes, hybrids and historical figures; and moments of human suffering and sacrifice. The evening-length work weaves together original compositions with narrative vignettes that meditate on lives and deaths in New York City, the slipperiness of reality in contemporary America, and a perennial longing for the arrival of some god.

Play | Italian Play on the Fantasy-Nature of Memory: The Perky Theresas

The Perky Theresas follows an author as he retraces his childhood through the stories of three aunts. He onverses with them in the places and with the words that emerge from memories, and which merge with the personal memories of the spectators. A story of a family told with modesty by one aunt where places, facts and people are a mixture of reality and fantasy, between personal anecdotes and others told or heard from other family stories. Inspired by the literary atmospheres of the book Family Lexicon (Lessico Famigliare) by Natalia Ginzburg and the cinematographic atmospheres of the iconic movie The Family (La Famiglia) by Ettore Scola. Play | Italian One-Man Show with Poetry Slam World Champion: My Mama Notarizes & Also Makes Risotto

“Mia mamma fa il notaio, ma anche il risotto” combines the languages of Teatro Canzone (an expressive genre related to theatricality, speech and music, with sung and acted parts) and performance poetry. This hybrid-language communicates the narrative of a Gen-Z boy in search of his own voice in a world that he doesn't fully understand. Moscerino doesn’t know how to talk to his mother and there’s no way his mother, an important and always busy notary, can really talk to him. The desire to communicate, in every way and by every means, accompanies him over the years. Poetry is the option for mother and son to understand one another. Written & Performed by Filippo Capobianco In English and Italian with English subtitles.

Play | Reimagining of Iconic Existentialist Play: Six Characters in Search of an Author

This original adaptation/reimagining of Luigi Pirandello’s play, Six Characters in Search of an Author, was first conceived by author and director Nick Gabriel at the height of the CoVID-19 pandemic and further developed in response to the #metoo movement. Gabriel has recreated a version of this metatheatrical, Existentialist classic that is faithful to Pirandello’s original vision, while contemporizing the circumstances to reflect the current cultural zeitgeist. In his version, the stage is populated with a group of actors and a director who are rehearsing a play called The Rules of the Game. As the rehearsal begins, six characters appear at the stage door. These new characters are not characters in The Rules of the Game. They're characters in a different, unnamed, unfinished dramatic narrative and they demand that their stories be heard. Original Playwright: Luigi Pirandello Adapted and Directed by Nick Gabriel Cast: Meridian Anastasia, Sophia Chacon, Feras Halabi, Finn Mackimmie, Isabella Kaplan, Michael Reese Shald, Sam Trott, Kevin Wang In English.

When the protagonist of Like an Octopus in a Guitar decides that he no longer wants to leave the house, he develops an obsession with death and begins to spend his days imagining his funeral. A funny and absurd journey inside the mind of an individual who is slowly losing his memories, where the actors’ bodies become a metaphor and instrument for remembering. In this suspended world, where even the names of the characters have been forgotten, dreams and reality merge to tell the story of a man’s internal battle. A battle between the desire to heal and the temptation to remain, forever, playing with death. Playwright: Marco Ziello Directors: Licia Amarante and Marco Ziello Cast: Annachiara Castorino, Gerardo D’Amato, Francesco Del Gaudio, Sabrina La Regina, Paola Santamaria, Marco Ziello In Italian with English subtitles.

Play | New Play from Kennedy Center-Featured Writer: We the People of these Fifty Acre Woods

Inspired by A.A. Milne's classic characters, the beloved 100 Acre Wood is in the midst of a civil war. Throughout this multi-year conflict, childhood friends Winnie, Christopher, and H.P. Piglet find themselves on different paths. H.P. struggles with the moral dilemmas of being a soldier, Christopher discovers what can happen when the powerless gain power, and Winnie is on the run for dodging the draft. Part war epic, part whimsical absurdism, this play looks at how people justify violence, the lengths you'll go to defend what you believe in and if fire is fought with fire - will the acres just burn to the ground? Musical | New, Original Musical Inspired by the Three Stooges: For Love or Funny

This event is the first public presentation of a piece developed during an incubator program, For Love or Funny, by fellowship recipients Sonya Hayden and Megan Loughran! For Love or Funny is a classic musical comedy which reimagines the Three Stooges as a trio of sisters: Mo, Mary, and Curly. In a goofy, slapstick version of 1930s Brooklyn, the sisters' family-owned clothing store is about to close--unless they can somehow get a whopping $500 by the next day. When they learn that the cops are offering that exact reward for the capture of a notorious robber, they hatch a harebrained scheme to catch him themselves. Along the way, our trio must rely on their bonds of sisterhood to succeed, while navigating mix-ups, mayhem, mistaken identities, and more. As a female writing duo, fellowship winners Loughran and Hayden are excited to put a modern twist on old-school comedy and center bold female characters who get to land the punches and the punchlines.

Staged Reading | Surreal Adaptation of Euripides’ Tragedy: Hecuba and Polyxena

This event is a studio reading of Hecuba and Polyxena by Amanda L. Andrei—a bold, surreal adaptation inspired by Euripides’ tragedy and the American eugenics movement. At its heart, this play is about a Philippine-born mother and baker, struggling to piece together memories of violence and loss in a haunting journey through history, identity, and survival. The evening highlights the voice of playwright Amanda L. Andrei, whose work centers diasporic perspectives and hidden histories.
