The program will open with each presenting the other’s work, leading into a dialogue on the process behind creating moments of engagement that transcend the everyday. Diana Al-Hadid NA examines the historical frameworks and perspectives that continue to shape discourse on culture and materials today. With a practice spanning sculpture, wall reliefs, and works on paper, the artist weaves together enigmatic narratives that draw inspiration from both ancient and modern civilizations. Nader Tehrani NA is the recipient of The American Academy of Arts and Letters’ Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize, the highest form of recognition of artistic merit in the United States. With nineteen Progressive Architecture Awards, he is also an elected member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Academy of Design, and recipient of the Design Visionary Award from the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

Opening Reception | Egg-Shaped Sculptures: Half Formed, Half Dissolved, Completely at the Brink of Clarity

Romanian Sculptor Andra Ursuta's work has long been inspired by her nihilistic portrayal of the human condition. Moreso, her pieces aim to confront topics of ethnic group expulsion, violence against women, and patriotism. This newest collection s a series of sixteen egg-shaped cast glass slabs. Ursuta has concluded that in this day and age, humanity is oversaturated in images that are instant, easy, and digestible. She aims to turn to the origins of visual art and oscillate between obscurity and clarity. Her pieces are half-formed, half-dissolved, and completely at the edge of legibility.

Author Reading | Johnisha Matthews Levi Discusses Her New Memoir, Number's Up

Attend a powerful conversation with Johnisha Matthews Levi. Levi will discuss her powerful new memoir, Number's Up: Cracking the Code of an American Family, which weaves together personal history and public policy to reveal hidden truths about family, justice, and survival in America. Levi's stirring memoir centers on her brilliant but troubled father, a Black World War II radioman who, facing economic barriers after his naval service, reinvents himself as a "numbers man" for an underground gambling operation. The job enables John Matthews to provide for his loved ones and to achieve a level of success far beyond his childhood dreams in the impoverished Jim Crow South. In the process, he becomes an indirect target of law enforcement. By examining the circumstances of her father's incarceration, Levi explores how multiple generations of the Matthews family have been haunted by the specter of violence against Black people. Number's Up offers a unique but quintessentially American story of survival through ingenuity as it asks: Is forgiveness the sole means of moving forward?"

Classical Music | Music in the Lobby: Contemporary Compositions by Mary Edwards

Mary Edwards is a composer and sound artist whose interdisciplinary practice encompasses themes of temporality, impermanence, nostalgia and the natural world that recur throughout her work. At this concert, she will present a program of original works, including her iterative composition, Everywhere We Are is the Farthest Place. The origins of this project began on an Arctic expedition above the 78th Parallel, where she first gathered field recordings of geological/oceanographic activity --vibroacoustic natural events--iceberg torrents, calving glaciers, whale song and converging subterranean rivers of the meltwater channel--then reimagined as an ode rather than an elegy. It takes listeners to the outermost space that resembles its earthly NASA Terrestrial Analog Site of the Svalbard Arctic desert, and lands us back down to praise our natural surroundings-- right now-- in the face of rapid change.
