Symposium | Reinvigorating 8th Ave in Midtown: Solutions-Focused Forum (In Person AND Online!)

The stretch of Eighth Avenue in the 30s and 40s is a gateway for hundreds of thousands of tourists, theatergoers, suburban visitors, and office workers who arrive in New York through Penn Station or the Port Authority Bus Terminal. But for decades, it has been one of Manhattan’s most uninviting commercial corridors, grappling with a unique set of challenges that many believe have intensified since the pandemic. This solutions-focused forum will discuss what is needed to reinvigorate this important but long-overlooked district. It will explore whether public realm innovations and investments being made in other districts across the city could be replicated on Eighth Avenue, and consider strategies for creating a safer, more vibrant, and more welcoming corridor. And it will examine how city leaders can address persistent quality of life concerns while ensuring that the many people in the district facing serious challenges—whether seeking help or not yet connected to services—receive the support they need.

Talk | Discussion on the Future of EU-US Relations

Listen to a moderated discussion about Transatlantic Relations between Europe and the United States under a second Trump administration.among Sophia Besch (Carnegie Endowment for International Peace), Hans Kundnani (UC Berkeley / London School of Economics), and Tara Varma (Brookings).  The election of Donald Trump to a second term in office has thrown the transatlantic relationship between the United States and the European Union (EU) into disarray.  What are the implications for European security, given that Russia is still waging an aggressive war on Europe’s doorstep? How is the EU responding to the prospect of losing America’s security umbrella? Can it create strategic autonomy, and delink its military from that of the United States? And how are rifts within Europe hindering or helping the EU as it charts a new path through an ever-changing security landscape?

Park Walk | Multi-Lingual Literary Stroll

New York City is the most polyglot city in the world - more than 800 languages are spoken here. With the Transletting Walk, attendees celebrate this richness and explore what happens when translation leaves the page and enters the street. The walk moves through Central Park and Riverside Park: readers read aloud in many languages - often at the same time - and participants are invited to join in. Translation can happen across or within languages. You can read along, translate, or simply listen and drift alongside. Feel free to bring your own texts - the walk is porous by design. At 6:00pm the event continues with a mix of short prepared pieces, collective translation prompts, and an open stage where results from the walk (or other texts participants bring) can be shared.

Opening Reception | Bed Sheet Art Exhibition

“Bjorn Amelan’s art is to make one sonnet after another… They are luxuriant gardens of imagery yet also maps, as in mapping, as in mapping of the mind.” – Brad Gooch In 2023, artist Bjorn Amelan introduced acrylic paint to his hemp bedsheet canvases, handwoven on farms in France, that he and his husband Bill T. Jones sleep on to this day. In addition to the texture lending itself well to ink, the unstretched, foldable surfaces allow him to work with the large-scale format while in the studio and on tour as Creative Director of New York Live Arts. When hung as vertical or horizontal tapestries, the weight, density, and texture of the uncoated works create scrolls, or quilts, of a sort of abstract calligraphy.

Party | Celebrating the Life of Writer Joan Acocella

This event celebrates the life of writer Joan Acocella. Her friends, colleagues, and collaborators commemorate her life and writings with a series of personal stories and reflections. Her books include her 1993 biography, Mark Morris; Twenty-Eight Artists and Two Saints (2007); and her posthumous volume, The Bloodied Nightgown (2024). Joan Acocella was one of the most vital, intellectually acute, and stylish writers and critics of the last half century. Acocella's writing was incisive, compulsively readable, and always full of surprising insight. It was also plainspoken, down to earth, and often funny. Her death has left a gaping hole in the cultural landscape. Although she was known primarily for her dance criticism, which she published in The New Yorker for over two decades, she was also a prolific book reviewer for both The New Yorker and The New York Review of Books, covering subjects as varied as Willa Cather, Primo Levi, Joan of Arc, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Dracula, Agatha Christie, hangovers, profanity, and Pinocchio.

Talk | Experts Explore the Concept of Public Pharma

Public pharma is an alternative to our current profit-driven pharmaceutical system. Public pharma uses the public sector to research, develop, manufacture, and distribute drugs. "Fixing a Broken System: The Path to Public Pharma in New York" is a critical discussion that will illuminate the transformative potential of publicly owned, manufactured, and distributed pharmaceuticals as we confront an industry that has prioritized profits over patients for too long, leaving patients without access to the medications they need to survive. This future builds on a long history of public pharma in the United States and around the world. Community organizers with type 1 diabetes, legal advocates for patients, and legislative and policy leaders will examine how public control over pharmaceutical development, manufacturing, pricing, and distribution could redirect an industry that has prioritized revenue over patients for decades. Our discussion will focus on proposed legislation that would empower New York State to make and distribute low-cost insulin.

Author Reading | Sasha Marianna Salzmann Celebrates Their Novel, Glorious People, + Discussion & Signing

Enjoy a reading by Sasha Marianna Salzmann from their acclaimed novel Glorious People (translated by Imogen Taylor), followed by a conversation between the author, Marianne Hirsch, and William Peterfield Trent (Professor Emerita of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University).  About Glorious People: For Lena, childhood summers meant training to be a good socialist at Pioneer camp, singing songs in praise of Lenin. But when perestroika shatters her world, all must be unlearned. Lena’s corner of the USSR is suddenly Ukraine: there is a McDonalds in Moscow’s Red Square and certified foreign whisky, but no food in the shops. For her friend Tatyana, survival in her changing homeland requires new skills: bullet dodging, business sense and a knack for bribery and corruption. When both women head West in search of new beginnings, their homesickness for a vanished land is inherited by their rebellious daughters, caught between forging their own identities and untangling the rich histories of the mothers who raised them. Copies of the book will be available for purchase during and after the event, and there will be a book signing following the program.

Talk | Artists Discuss Exhibition Inspired by Dante's Divine Comedy

Artists Tammy Nguyen and William Villalongo will be in conversation about A Comedy for Mortals, an exhibition of Nguyen's artist books inspired by Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy series that is currently on view at The Cooper Union Library. The works, which combine sculptural elements with screen-prints, handset type, and hand-made and hand-marbled papers, examine the history of the Cold War and relations between the United States and other countries, particularly those in the Global South and those engaged in the Non-Aligned Movement. Through their multimedia practices that combine painting and printmaking among other media both Nguyen and Villalongo explore the politics of historical erasures.

Opening Reception | Multi-Medium Solo Exhibition on Racism & Colonialism in NYC's Architecture

Decisions at a Desk is a solo exhibition by artist Christian Hincapie, which encompasses drawing, printmaking, and sculpture. Hincapie uses art to investigate previously unstudied decorative motifs found within the Harlem section of Riverside Park--in particular, four shackled monkey statues that were installed at the entrance of the 148th Street playground's restrooms. In Hincapie's project, these statues act as a prism towards understanding the subtle and oblique ways that pernicious ideology is designed into the built environment. Dating from Moses' redesign of Riverside Park in the 1930s, the shackled monkey statues in the Harlem playground are evocative of racist and colonial symbolism that glorifies Western dominance over objects, animals, and people through exoticization and display. The statues remained in the park until 2023. The works include inverted photographic diazotype blueprints, monumental site-specific rubbings, and a negative impression of one of the monkey statues captured in a sunken relief sculpture made from kneaded eraser putty, a gesture that conjures their eventual removal. Keenly attuned to the whims of public discourse and social memory, Hincapie has assembled a counter-archive through which to contend with the afterlife of these now-removed statues, as well as the broader landscape of racialized urban planning.

Opening Reception | Oil on Canvas: Realities in Dystopias

Artist Sasha Gordon's pieces can best be described as hyperrealistic. Gordon's execution in technical precision in the layering of oils in electric hues begs to be celebrated. The artist unfolds surreal narratives on canvas, depicting absurd scenarios and disorienting spatial compositions. Ultimately, she reimagines fractions of extracted inner life with envisioned worlds. Her pieces address the viewer with candor in unsettling and familiar intimacy.

Opening Reception | Solo Exhibition Exploring 1970s Italian Counterculture

In histories of postwar political protest, the events of 1968 hold pride of place in the Italian and international imagination alike. Yet the late 1970s witnessed one of the most significant movements in Italy since World War Two – one which assailed the seemingly inveterate conventions of political affiliation. Intersected by student activism, feminist and LGBTQ critique, and a range of DIY practices – from the underground press and street performances to “free radio” – the 1977 movement shifted the parameters of ideological affinity and their expression in and as culture. One of the key creative forces behind the Indiani Metropolitani and other countercultural groups in Rome and Bologna, Pablo Echaurren (b. 1951) helped to reconfigure the language of student and social protest in Italy as an illustrator, activist, and scholar. His work over five decades incorporates registers high and low, using comics, collage, caricature, and other means to reprise and transform historical avant-garde tactics borrowed from Futurism and Dada. Working alongside various collaborators, Echaurren embodies the collective efforts of a generation.

Lecture | Expert Discusses Peoples' Political Relationship with Land

Philippe Descola, Professor Emeritus at the College de France, explores the cosmopolitics of the Anthropocene. In many parts of the world, the use of land depends on a host of non-human entities endowed with an autonomous agency with whom humans must negotiate - deities, spirits, genies, ancestors, mountains, animals, meteors. The political relationship to the land differs from what we are familiar with in the Western world, either because non-humans are social agents within an encompassing collective, or because they are seen as subjects acting within their own collectives. These examples are worth considering for a less destructive and less anthropocentric approach to the Earth. One of the world's leading anthropologists, Philippe Descola has developed a comparative anthropology of relations between humans and nonhumans that has revolutionized the human sciences and challenged our ways of thinking about the urgent ecological issues of our time. For Descola, modernity is characterized by the perception of a constitutive division between nature and society.

Author Reading | Historian Discusses His New Book, On Antisemitism

This event marks the launch of On Antisemitism: A Word in History with the author, Mark Mazower. From one of our most eminent historians, a penetrating and timely examination of how the meaning of antisemitism has mutated, with unexpected and troubling consequences. In a piercingly brilliant book that ranges from the term's invention in the late nineteenth century to the present, Mark Mazower argues the landscape is very different. Before the Second World War, Jews were a minority apart and drawn by opposition to Fascism into an alliance with other oppressed peoples. Today, in contrast, Jews are considered "white," and for today's anti-colonialists, Israel's treatment of the Palestinians has become a critical issue. The old Left solidarity is a thing of the past; indeed, the loudest voices decrying antisemitism see it coming from the Left, not the Right.
